Exhibition: The Most Famous Look of All...

The latest exhibition at the Museum at FIT, produced by the graduate students in the Fashion and Textile Studies program, celebrates a legend this month; one of screen, style, and some seriously glamorous composure. Lauren Bacall: The Look is the first exhibition of its kind to examine Bacall's relationship with fashion, within the context of both her personal life and acting career.

Among the multidtude of gems in the exhibition is a selection of editorial photographs, many by fashion photographer Louis Dahl-Wolfe. Not only did Dahl-Wolfe shoot the now-iconic Harper's Bazaar cover of Bacall in 1943, she also photographed the young actress at various stages of her early career. During the 1940s and 50s, Bacall was honing her "look," her sultry gaze, accentuated by her alluring waves and a strong red lip.

Bacall's relationship with fashion is multifacted and the exhibition highlights her various friendships with some of the most affluent designers and couturiers of the twentieth century. Among them, Marc Bohan, Pierre Cardin, Norman Norell, and Yves Saint-Laurent.

A selection of the pieces on display were featured in the 1968 television special Bacall & the Boys in which Bacall styled the latest Parisian fall fashions. Clips from the special feature prominetly in the exhibtion and are not to be missed!

The show is supplemented by a website full of information about Bacall's career, life and wardrobe. If you can't make it to New York to see The Look, check out the illustrated timeline of Bacall's style and enjoy a Youtube playlist of some of Bacall's most notable roles.
